Sordo: Poland must improve safety

Hyundai star Dani Sordo has called on the FIA to look again at spectator safety on Rally Poland.

The event ran under a yellow card this season and while there were improvements, Sordo said there were still areas of significant concern for the Mikolajki-based rally.

“I like this rally,” he told MN. “But we need to keep the safety in mind – especially with the new car coming. There are a lot of spectators on this rally and sometimes they are a little bit in the middle of the road. We need to be careful, if not they will cancel the rally and this will be a big disappointment for all of the fans.

“We need to remember that safety is so important. Sometimes we see the fans being crazy, like they want to feel the car – but if they feel they car, they will feel it only once. We need them further back, the FIA knows this and is working on it.”

Poland’s arrival on the calendar was delayed due to reported promoter funding issues as well as safety concerns. Its July date was only confirmed at last month’s World Motor Sport Council meeting.
