Evans: Rovanpera a year away from WRC
Bettega Memorial Rallysprint winner Elfyn Evans says his rival in the final – Finnish sensation Kalle Rovanpera – is ready for the World Rally Championship as soon as his age allows.
The 16-year-old son of former world rally winner Harri Rovanpera beat Evans in one of the four races at the mixed-surface track at Bologna on Sunday – but in the end the Welshman’s pace was too much for the Finnish Fiesta RS WRC pilot.
Evans admitted he was impressed with what he’d seen from Rovanpera.
“I was impressed from his first warm-up run, where I think he was fastest,” said Evans. “I don’t think there’s any secret that he’s done a lot of driving, but still, to get into a World Rally Car at the age of 16 and drive it like he has done, it’s very obvious he’s very talented.
“The problem he’s going to face now is: where can he drive? He’s still too young to compete in most countries and the real challenge he has is getting experience and getting outside of the places he knows best like Finland and Latvia.”
