Merc needs principles

Motor Sport News - - Interview: Chris Haird -

You have to ask, what with all the speculation over who is going to drive alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season, what exactly is the point of a young driver programme?

If Pascal Wehrlein doesn’t get the gig, then what will be his future? Where will he end up? And will it mean that Esteban Ocon is parked in lower-ranked F1 teams until Hamilton decides to move on?

Clearly Wehrlein is talented but a bit green. But if Merc believe in their scouting and recruiting system then surely it is a no-brainer.

Look at what Red Bull did with Max Verstappen – they didn’t leave him festering at the back of the grid. They took the bull by the horns (sorry about that).

And look at the results that provided.

So come on Toto Wolff – give the youngsters a chance.
