8 OGIER TAKES HIS FOURTH TITLE
WHEN: OCTOBER 16 WHERE: SALOU, SPAIN
There have definitely been occasions in the last four years and 31 wins where Sebastien Ogier has been able to throttle back a bit on his way to victory. Groundwork done, Seb-style cruise control could be sought for a special Sunday drive. Not in Spain. Not this time.
Ogier fought tooth and nail in what turned out to be a rain-hit Catalan classic. The result was another win and another title – but what a way to take number four!
His efforts to overcome the conditions made his entry to the WRC’S most elite club even more fitting. In Spain in October, Ogier turned a trio into a quartet as he became only the fourth driver ever to win four titles – joining Sebastien Loeb, Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Makinen at the very top of world rallying’s tree.
And Ogier’s fourth success was undoubtedly his toughest. The FIA did all it could to trip the Frenchman over: forcing the series leader (aka, Ogier) first on the road for two days of every rally meant he spent much of the season with considerably less grip than his rivals. You might have heard him mention it on occasion…
He overcame it and still won. True champ. DE
