RAC RALLY OF THE TESTS
The classic side of rallying, that which does not venture onto special stages, had another tremendous season and organisations like HERO, ERA and the HRCR continued to work wonders for cars spanning eight decades of history.
While some truly epic events ran in far-flung corners of the world, here in the UK the RAC Rally of the Tests was an absolute stand-out as it captured the spirit of the classic RAC Rally, how it was before the event became a forest-based special stage rally in the mid-1960s.
A capacity entry for the 15th edition tackled a route that started in Bournemouth and headed west and north to the finish in Chester after three long and tough days. The competition was just as tough as ever and the event is such that even getting a 50-year-old car to the finish is a worthy result.
Many rated this as one of the best editions of the ‘Tests’ to date and Andy Lane and Richard Crozier were the best of the lot in their Volvo 123GT.
