OULTON PARK GOLD CUP
When: August 26-28 Where: Oulton Park, Cheshire Web: oultonpark.co.uk Over the late August Bank Holiday weekend, the glorious Oulton Park Circuit plays host to the biggest celebration of historic racing held north of Donington Park.
The Gold Cup is the most famous race in the 60-year story of the Cheshire parkland track and recalls an era when the track regularly hosted nonchampionship Formula 1 races.
Racing runs through Sunday afternoon and from mid-morning on Monday and the 2017 programme has several gems to headline the action. While the HSCC’S portfolio of categories delivers the bulk of the racing, capped by firm favourites like Historic Formula Ford and Historic Touring Cars, the club has pulled off a blinder by adding two races for Historic Formula 2 to the schedule.
As the 1600cc F2 formula celebrates 50 years, the younger 2-litre cars will set a fierce pace as these fantastic single-seaters return to rural Cheshire. Another high-profile guest race will be the Historic Touring Car Challenge, run by Motor Racing Legends. This has really come good in recent times and a strong field of 1970s and 1980s cars will make a mighty spectacle. Add in the even newer Super Tourers and it all adds up to a fine weekend of racing at this most scenic of tracks.
