LETTERS Sad for Lydden

-

Having been a huge rallycross fan since my father took me to the European rallycross round at Lydden Hill in 1980, I cannot believe the news that as of 2018, Silverstone will be hosting the UK’S round of the World RX series.

Lydden is the spiritual home of the sport and is adored by drivers and fans alike. It is a unique venue, with its bowl-like position creating an amphitheatre-like setting. Not only being a treat for spectators its fast flowing and undulating design being a real challenge for drivers also.

So this is now to be replaced by the series playing second fiddle to some motorsport circus at Silverstone with the cars I suspect travelling round a flat square like creation within the infield hundreds of yards away from the nearest spectator. And this is progress...

I can’t help but feel let down and somewhat betrayed by the promoters IMG, although I’m sure they have their reasons.

For the good of rallycross in the UK, let’s hope they are good ones. I seriously hope that promoters IMG and the FIA get their fingers burnt on this one and the series returns to its rightful place soon. That is, if Lydden is still in operation then. A sad day indeed.
