EX-F1 mechanic Gibson to race in Sports 2000
Ex-benetton Formula 1 mechanic Grant Gibson is hoping to race in the UK for the first time this year after purchasing an ex-paul Trayhurn Van Diemen Duratec Sports 2000 car.
Gibson raced in his native Australia in his formative years before moving to the UK to work in Formula 1.
“I used to race in Australia a long time ago, I raced a Lotus 15, ex-graham Hill car,” said Gibson. “Then I raced a Repco Brabham 3-litre car. I came to England to get involved with F1 and learn the latest tricks to then go back to Australia and apply that.”
Gibson spent the 1980s in F1, and in 1986 he looked after Nigel Mansell’s Williams, which famously blew a tyre while he was contending for the championship.
Gibson hopes to be out in the Sports 2000 Duratec Championship by the end of the year, but the Van Diemen needs a refresh first.
“I’m planning to repair or replace a lot of parts on the car,” added Gibson. “I have business interests so time is a bit tight this season. And I’m back to Australia in a couple of weeks for six weeks. We’ll certainly try to be ready before the end of the year.”
