Ogier proves a point
I think Sebastien Ogier’s win on the Monte Carlo Rally shows that the WRC really can be the test of who the best drivers in the sport are– much more so than in any other branch of motor racing.
Ogier stepped into an M-sport car with very little testing and went out and put the ‘car’ among the pigeons.
Yes he benefited from some luck as Thierry Neuville binned it, but he came through all the tricky conditions to land M-sport’s first win for ages.
I know everyone was starting with a blank sheet of paper in terms of set-up with the new cars, but it showed that the cream can rise to the top, no matter what the car is underneath him.
It also means that we are in for a belter of a title fight this season. Hyundai, Citroen, Toyota and Ford will all be fighting at the front. It looks like we could be in for the best WRC season for ages. Jason Lowe Via email
