GP2 and GP3 to get standalone Jerez race
Team Hard retains Jake Hill to complete 2017 BTCC driver line up
The GP2 and GP3 Series will race in Jerez for the first time this season after revealing their 2017 calendars.
The Formula 1 feeder and support series will have their own standalone event at the Spanish venue on the October 6-8 weekend, having previously tested at the circuit in 2014.
GP2 previously held standalone events at Valencia and Bahrain’s Sakhir Circuit – a venue that returns to its calendar this year – and raced on the FIA GT undercard at Portimao in 2009, while it also supported the World Endurance Championship at Bahrain in 2015.
The GP3 calendar has been trimmed from nine events to eight, and also features one less flyaway event than in 2016 – with its races at the Malaysian Grand Prix event also falling off its schedule.
Both series have also lost races at Hockenheim from their schedules, with the German Grand Prix having been removed from the F1 calendar.
Team Hard has completed its line-up for the 2017 British Touring Car Championship by retaining Jake Hill.
The team will switch to the ex-team BKR VW CCS and had already signed Mike Epps and Will Burns to drive the cars. Hill will be starting his second full campaign with the team after his 2016 campaign. He finished 17th in the points with six top six finishes.
The Kent racer, who had only made occasional appearances in the BTCC before the 2016 season, said: “Last year I learned a huge amount and felt we made some strong progress.
“We worked really well as a team, and it’s really significant having continuity with the crew and the partners. It’s great to be racing the Passat CC with the latest RML kit as it will be strong at lots of the circuits.”
Team head Tony Gilham said that he was pleased to help Hill to return to the line-up for 2017.
“Jake was really strong last year and got the absolute maximum from the car,” said Gilham. “The team worked really well with him and with the new cars I’m confident all three of our drivers will be in the mix.”
