F3 winner Barnicoat swaps single-seaters for place in Mclaren GT Academy
Briton Ben Barnicoat will swap single-seaters for a place on Mclaren’s GT Academy programme this year.
Barnicoat, a two-time European Formula 3 Championship race winner, will retain backing from the Racing Steps Foundation, which helped to place the 20-year-old at Mclaren.
He will start his programme with a shared drive in a Tekno Autosports Mclaren 650S GT3 alongside Will Davison and fellow Brit Jonny Kane, who like Barnicoat will be making his debut for Mclaren, in this weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hours event.
Barnicoat will also contest a full campaign in the Blancpain GT Series [BGTS], having previously made a one-off appearance in a WRT Audi in the series finale at the Nurburgring last September, while further outings are also expected to be confirmed.
“Ben will be doing a BGTS programme in both the Endurance and Sprint Cups, which will be announced at a later date,” Andrew Kirkaldy, Mclaren GT team principal, told MN’S sister brand Autosport. “There are a lot of programmes to be defined and we aren’t saying who’s likely to be doing what until everything is sorted out.”
