Mcraes head to New Zealand

Alister and Jimmy Mcrae will contest this weekend’s Leadfoot Festival in New Zealand – with the younger of the two, Alister, hoping to improve on the second place he managed on last season’s event.

Mcrae Jr will drive the same ex-possum Bourne 850bhp Subaru Impreza he used to win the Race to the Sky in 2015. Jimmy’s progress up the Leadfoot Festival hill will be slightly more sedate – he will drive a Ford Escort RS1800.

“It’s a great event,” said Alister Mcrae. “It’s a bit like a smaller- scale Goodwood Festival of Speed at Rod Millen’s place in New Zealand, but with 850bhp to work with, it can get quite exciting! I was second last year, so obviously the plan is to go one better this time around.”

Mcrae Sr added: “I didn’t take a lot of persuading to drive this car. It’s going to be a lot of fun, but I think we’ll be a wee bit slower than Alister…”

The Mcrae name remains huge in New Zealand, with Colin Mcrae dominating the country’s WRC qualifier with three wins in the mid-90s.
