ANDERSON TO CA1 FOR BRC
Jamie Anderson will switch to the CA1 Sport team for his assault on the 2017 British Rally Championship, with a new Ford Fiesta R5.
Anderson competed in an R5 car and wrote pacenotes for the first time in 2016 having previously competed in the BTRDA Rally Series.
Running with MSL, the Midlands-based driver scored a best finish of sixth in the BRC on the Scottish Rally and set competitive times on Wales Rally GB against WRC2 drivers.
“It’s a big change for us to go there [to CA1],” said Anderson. “We had so many shortfalls in our team last year and when you’re running against yourself all year [without competition] we had no-one to contend with.
“CA1 Sport will fill the gap in what we need to make the next step. The new car is up there now, it’s a 2016 car.”
Anderson ran Michelins in the BRC last year before switching to DMACKS for Rally GB. He says that they’ll go with whatever CA1 Sport decide in that department.
“It depends on what CA1 are going to do,” added Anderson. “We’re in with them for the whole package, that’s part and parcel of what you sign up for and being part of a team.”
CA1 Sport finished second in the teams’ standings to the Autotek-run DMACK squad, which won’t return in 2017, and was the only team other than DMACK to win a BRC event with Swede Fredrik Ahlin, also in a Ford Fiesta R5. The squad – headed up by ex-m-sport engineer Martin Wilkinson – will announce the team’s full line-up in the coming weeks.
Wilkinson said: “I’m looking forward to having Jamie onboard for 2017. We want to run him the same as the other drivers. When he came to me that was one of the suggestions.
“Yes, we could run him and, yes, we had the capacity, but it had to be on the same level playing field as the other drivers in that we do what we do [work on the car] and he can concentrate on the notes and his driving. He’ll have all the advice he needs and hopefully a relaxed atmosphere back in the service park to allow him to prepare.”
