Alex Waterman has been confirmed as the first entrant into the British Rally Championship’s new Cadet class.

The 21-year-old made his rallying debut in September last year, competing in a number of single-venue rallies.

Now he’ll take his Ford Fiesta R2 to the Border Counties – the BRC’S opening round – to compete for the championship’s prize of free entries to events in 2018.

“I’ve just done three weeks out in Norway with John Haugland,” said Waterman, who has been training to get up to speed for the series. “I felt good on Tarmac, it was the loose I was less skilled in. I feel like a different driver having been taught by John.

“The Cadet class is ideal, we were going to do the Juniors knowing we weren’t going to be competitive. But when this came along, it was a done deal for us.”

Waterman’s R2 will be run by Mick Harris’ preparation outfit MH Motorsport.
