NEUVILLE SET TO TACKLE BOUCLES
Hyundai man gets Porsche 911
Hyundai factory star Thierry Neuville will take time out of his World Rally Championship programme to drive a Porsche 911 on the Legend Boucles Bastogne on February 18/19.
Neuville and WRC co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul will switch from their regular Hyundai to compete on their home event in a 1973 Group 4 Porsche 911RS from Bernard Munster Autosport. Neuville has previously contested the Boucles in a Citroen Visa and also a Ford Escort Mk2.
Straight after Rally Sweden, Neuville and Gilsoul will be the big stars on the Belgian event in the three-litre Porsche that Munster used to win the Boucles in 2016. Once again, the event will feature asphalt sections on the first day and gravel tests on the second.
“This time, everything came together,” said Neuville, who comes from nearby St Vith.
“It will be the only opportunity this year to drive with no pressure and for our fans, just to have fun and make some skids at the wheel of a classic car. But this doesn’t mean that we won’t be trying to win.”
Several tests are planned ahead of the event, which is often affected by snow and ice.
Contesting the rally will have a special significance for Gilsoul. “It is really a great pleasure to come back to the Legend Boucles, an event dear to my heart as my parents met during this rally 41 years ago,” he said.
“My father absolutely wanted to see Stig Blomqvist compete on the rally. Without the Swedish driver, I may not be here today.”
