TOYOTA GAZOO RACING YARIS WRC
Jari-matti Latvala/miikka Anttila: 2nd Juho Hanninen/kaj Lindstrom: 16th Monte fastest times: 0
Toyota’s Monte result bodes very well for the rest of the year – simply because both cars made it through the event without any major reliability issues. The set-up aboard both Yaris WRCS evolved considerably through the rally, but that was born out of the fact that they hadn’t tested in the conditions found in the Alps last month.
Sweden should bring another step in pace: Latvala has tested extensively in the snow and both he and Hanninen have huge experience to draw on in those conditions. But it’s on the gravel where the Yaris could work best. Most of the 12,000-plus miles of testing were completed on the loose in Finland, Spain and Portugal and this is where team principal Tommi Makinen feels the car excels.
Whatever happens, the Japanese giant’s return has been exceptional so far. Right now, Toyota’s record is just as good as that of recent WRC benchmark Volkswagen – when the Polo R WRC arrived it ‘only’ managed a second on its debut.
