Fifty years ago this weekend, something big started at a little track in Kent.
One man’s fleeting concept of a hybrid form of motorsport, tailor made for TV audiences, has grown into something of a phenomenon over the last five decades.
Rallycross has gone global. Races are held around the world as part of World, European and domestic championships and the sport now boasts star drivers and is becoming a hotbed for manufacturers too.
Of course there’s been some bad times along the lengthy and winding, twin-surface road of the last 50 years, but rallycross is truly enjoying a boom in its anniversary season.
