Fifty years ago this week­end, some­thing big started at a lit­tle track in Kent.

One man’s fleet­ing con­cept of a hy­brid form of mo­tor­sport, tai­lor made for TV au­di­ences, has grown into some­thing of a phe­nom­e­non over the last five decades.

Rallycross has gone global. Races are held around the world as part of World, Euro­pean and do­mes­tic cham­pi­onships and the sport now boasts star driv­ers and is be­com­ing a hot­bed for man­u­fac­tur­ers too.

Of course there’s been some bad times along the lengthy and wind­ing, twin-sur­face road of the last 50 years, but rallycross is truly en­joy­ing a boom in its an­niver­sary sea­son.
