Time for the sleeping giant

With all the WRC elements in place, Ford should make a return

Motor Sport News - - Have Your Say -

When Sebastien Ogier stood on the top step of the rostrum on the Monte Carly Rally after a superb drive in the M-sport Ford Fiesta, there were lots of people who sat up and took notice.

Among the onlookers were some of Ford’s very top brass, including Dave Pericak, the firm’s head of global performance, as David Evans reports in his piece on page 12. That inevitably set the tongues wagging. Could the Blue Oval be seriously considering a return to the World Rally Championship’s top flight?

The answer is not known yet, but all of the ingredients are now in place to make it a very attractive proposition for Ford. Malcolm Wilson’s firm is in an enviable position across several branches of the sport. The template for Ford to become immediately entrenched back in rallying – including its lower reaches – is in place. And, best of all, it now has a rally-winning top-flight car and driver too.

Ford will tell you that it has always had an open door for Wilson and M-sport. We just wish it could go that bit further and formalise the links. Matt James, Editor
