Karter Sam Smelt will graduate to car racing this season with a drive in a Power Maxed Racing-built Volkswagen Polo R in the Volkswagen Racing Cup.

Smelt, 20, has raced karts for the past five years and most recently finished seventh overall in the Rotax Max Wintercup. He tested his 2017 machine for the first time at Donington Park last Thursday.

“I’ve wanted to move into cars and have the ambition to get to touring cars,” said Smelt. “I know I have a lot to learn but hope to gain the experience in the first year and look for challenging more in the second.

“It’s awesome; I can’t believe the torque and I am really looking forward to racing it. I’ve done trackdays at Donington before but most of the other circuits in the championship will be new to me.”
