FIA demands further snow guarantees
Despite the winter conditions on last week’s Rally Sweden, the FIA has told the organisers of Rally Sweden it wants further guarantees of snow-sure stages.
Last year’s event came close to being cancelled due to a lack of snow and ice – conditions which prompted the decision to run out of central service in Torsby, 60 miles north of the 2016 base in Karlstad.
Last season, nine stages were cancelled, but this year not one was lost because of the conditions. But FIA rally director Jarmo Mahonen said the issue was one of safety as much as spectacle.
“This rally has to be snowsafe,” he told MN. “That is not an option and we will be firm on that. When we have snowbanks they make the event much more safe.”
Rally Sweden clerk of the course Christina Lundqvist said her team would evaluate potential route changes in coming months.
“The weather is a little bit upside down everywhere right now,” she said.
