Thorburn secures new R5 for Snowman
Euan Thorburn has completed the purchase of a Ford Fiesta R5 and will compete on this weekend’s Snowman Rally, the opening round of the Scottish Rally Championship.
The 2013 SRC champion rented the car for the Grizedale Stages Rally in December 2016, finishing third.
“Grizedale was good, but we didn’t own the car so it wasn’t the ideal place to go and push a car hard,” he explained. “It’ll be good to get some confidence back as last year was a disaster and we lost enthusiasm a bit. Hopefully we can get back to what we had a few years ago and win some rallies.”
Thorburn failed to finish a rally in 2016, struggling with the reliability of his Peugeot 208 T16 R5. The car has now been sold. His new Fiesta was purchased from Ken Skidmore’s Autotek outfit, and is the car Mark Higgins used to finish second on Rally Isle of Man last year.
The Scot wouldn’t confirm if he will stick to a particular championship in 2017.
“There’s no plans for definite,” said Thorburn. “We’ll do the Border Counties [the opening round of the British Rally Championship and second of the SRC] and see how we go from there.”
