Motorsport Engineering student Shiels swaps rallying for rallycross after maiden RX150 test outing
Former Formula 1000 Junior Rally Championship competitor Georgia Shiels will compete in the RX150 Rallycross Championship this year.
Shiels, currently a University of Bolton Motorsport Engineering student, tested one of the single- make buggies for the first time recently and has switched from her initial plans to compete in a Ford Fiesta R2 rally car this season.
“This has all come about really quickly, but it’s going to be a really exciting year,” said the 21-year-old.
“I’ve been to watch rallycross a few times before and it’s a bit similar to rallying in that you can go sideways a lot, and who doesn’t love going sideways a lot?
“The buggies feel very different to drive to what they look like – the power in them is immense. I’ve never driven anything so powerful before, or even anything that’s rear-wheel-drive before, but I picked it up pretty quickly and had loads of fun in the end.”
Double BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross champion John Ward will also join the RX150 series this year.
