The contest for Class C2 also became the battle for overall spoils in Category 2 as several leading contenders fell by the wayside including Stanley Orr/stephen Mcauley, who went out with rear suspension problems.
It was a battle of the Avengers as Eliot Retallick/tim Tugwell took on Andrew Stokes/adrian Mcnally in a cracking contest. Both crews set an impressive pace and it was Retallick who arrived back at Llandovery with a winning margin of 56s. The gap was only 24s going into the final stage, but Retallick flew through the fog to take a further 32s profit.
Running the Avengers close for Category 2 was the Pinto-powered Escort Mk1 of Simon Pickering/ Paul Barbet and some good afternoon stages put them to within seven seconds of Stokes as Barbet delivered notes for the first time. Class C3 victory was their reward.
Not far adrift of the Avengers on their way to Class D2 victory were David Hopkins and Tony Vart in their Sunbeam Talbot. “This has been 18 months in the making,” said Hopkins after a catalogue of engine dramas.
In Category 1, Phil Harris and Richard Suter (Mini Cooper) had a handy margin over Mike Barratt and Emily Retallick (Ford Cortina GT) on a rally that was generally kind to the older cars.
