Special events planned to mark 50th birthday
With this being such a significant year for Formula Vee it is no surprise that the 750 Motor Club has got a few special events planned for 2017.
The highlight is undoubtedly going to be a special anniversary meeting at Cadwell Park on July 29/30. As part of this there will be non-championship Vee races that are set to feature a host of guest racers.
“We are extending invitations to European Vee clubs and associations and are gaining expressions of interest from their drivers,” says 750MC competitions manager Giles Groombridge. “We’re contacting a few former racers and trying to get a few historic cars out.
“We are trying to get some people over from Germany and historic Vees and the Irish contingent and try to make it a pan-european event.”
Besides this, the club has managed to secure the championship a rare race weekend on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix track in May. Groombridge expects a big entry for that round and, with some returning drivers added to the mix, a large grid is likely throughout the year.
“I think grids this year will be in the mid 30s,” he says. “I think it’s going to be a very interesting year as well. Paul Smith has been the champion in three of the past four years but he is moving on to RGB and that leaves things very open this season.”
The man himself agrees and is also looking forward to the season ahead. “I don’t think there’s going to be one person who wins most races, I think it will be a different winner every weekend,” Smith says. And if he’s right then the 50th year of Formula Vee could well be one of its most exciting yet.
