Honda’s shame

Mclaren’s Fer­nando Alonso was forced to serve 35 places of grid penal­ties for an il­le­gal engine change on Saturday night. Alonso qual­i­fied in the top 10, but was dumped to the back af­ter Honda dis­cov­ered a hy­draulic leak on the Spa­niard’s engine af­ter Fri­day, and elected to change the power unit en­tirely af­ter FP3 on Saturday. Honda’s Yusuke Hasegawa said: “We didn’t have an engine fail­ure, we had a leak­age, which we can change if we find out the cause with enough time, but we couldn’t, that’s why we had to change the engine.” Mclaren-honda had to break cur­few to do the job, send­ing Alonso to the back.
