Chris-craft

Commander 42

-

Any concerns that this new Italian-built downeast cruiser might not feel like a proper Chris-craft were swiftly allayed by a brief run out in this handsome new model. Chris-craft’s designers have done a root and branch makeover of the original Austin Parker boat on which it is based to ensure that everything looks and feels like the real deal. The varnished mahogany capping glows with the same glossy intensity, the stainless-steel grab-rails feel as solid as ever and the diamond-patterned helm seats still cosset you in all the right places. The fact that Austin Parker’s original flowing exterior lines seem such a natural step up from Chris-craft’s existing range of open launches is pure happenstance but most buyers need never know it wasn’t planned all along.

With a pair of Volvo IPS600 diesels it was never going to perform or sound quite like the big V8 petrol launches but it has a decent turn of speed and quick enough steering responses to satisfy most owners. The way the weighted Chris-craft logo stays upright whatever

the angle of the wheel is a particularly neat touch. Optional cockpit doors give owners the choice of an open or closed deck space under the hard top but it’s a pity there’s only a small hatch rather than a proper sunroof as the low roofline causes issues with visibility when leaning hard into a turn.

With only one proper cabin forward and a second open-plan sleeping space behind the companionway, it’s no match for a Princess V39 in the accommodation stakes but most Chris-craft buyers won’t care. The view over that glorious swooping foredeck is enough to have most people reaching for their credit cards regardless.
