Ge­off Duke: 1923-2015

Ge­off Duke, a six times TT win­ner and six times world cham­pion, has died aged 92.

Mak­ing his name dur­ing the 1950s, Duke dom­i­nated on the Isle of Man while also claim­ing 350cc and 500cc cham­pi­onships. In 1953 he was made an oBe for his ser­vices to the motorcycling in­dus­try.

Although a Lan­cas­trian by birth, the Is­land be­came Duke’s spir­i­tual home and he set up busi­ness in­ter­ests there fol­low­ing his re­tire­ment from rac­ing. His son Peter founded Duke Video which has its head­quar­ters in the cap­i­tal Dou­glas.

Trib­utes to Duke have poured in, in­clud­ing those from within the mo­tor­cy­cle press. Clas­sic Racer edi­tor Malc Wheeler said: “If ever the word leg­end de­scribed any­one, it was Ge­off Duke and what he achieved rac­ing among, and be­ing, one of the very best at what he did.”
