CRAZY RACING AND BIG MONEY RAISED FOR A BRILLIANT CAUSE
RAF Wittering Mopedathon: ‘Sheer mental fun’
Will Brassington was one of over 200 riders in 48 teams taking part in the 2015 six-hour endurance Mopedathon. Through entry fees and donations the event raised £2500 for charities including the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
“I’m battling Wilma Flintstone,” recalls Will, 26. “She’s riding a pterodactyl. I dive to overtake but I’m blocked by a Ninja Turtle. I get clear but suddenly Santa has a spill in front of me…” He breaks off, laughing.
This is no dream but the six-hour Mopedathon, a team endurance challenge held at RAF Wittering, in Lincolnshire. Running since 2002, the event incorporates a mad Le Mansstyle start and a track mixing tarmac and off-road corners, providing plenty of opportunity for the tag-team riders to demonstrate heroic skills amid the colourful chaos.
Will and five friends, family and colleagues made their Wittering debut in 2015. Embracing the light-hearted atmosphere, ‘Team Pro-laps’ donned jockeys’ gear over leathers and decked their 50cc Yamaha Aerox in fur, tail, reins and a papier-mâché horsehead.
“She lasted the whole race,” marvels Will. “Six hours, three crashes but Roxy survived – and we won the prize for best fancy dress! The Mopedathon’s an amazing combination of bikes and charity, good-natured racing and sheer mental fun – for a great cause! You camp overnight and stay for the post-event party, and everyone’s so friendly and helpful, sharing tools and tips. Winning would have been nice but taking part is utterly brilliant.
“We’re already planning our costumes for next year!”
Will’s advice on getting involved
“It can be daunting to research these events and see people who compete regularly. But when it’s for charity the atmosphere is so welcoming. Go over your bike properly – it’s got to last – then throw yourself into everything, especially the fancy dress. Not only do you get into the spirit, the Mopedathon awards lap bonuses for the bestdressed!”
This year’s event…
The Mopedathon will splutter to life again on the weekend of April 30, 2016. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org.
