There are posts flying around in a few internet forums that the French have extended the requirement for drivers to carry a hi-viz in case of breakdown to motorcyclists. Is this correct and when does it come into effect? James Hill, Ayr

Answered by Alastair Mcfarlane, MCI Tours On this occasion the interweb rumour mill is correct. This new motorcyclespecific law came into effect in France on January 1. You have to carry a hi-viz overjacket for yourself and another for your pillion if you have one. However, don’t panic, you only have actually to wear it if your bike breaks down to avoid people getting mown down at the side of the road (who said the Gendarmes might want a bigger contribution to their pension pot?!).

‘Avez-vous le high-viz clobber?’ He’s alright, he’s got an old MCN stuffed down his front Drop the ball from height and it will bounce, lower it in and it will sink
