Yamaha's three-wheeled threesome
Yamaha seem very keen to pursue three-wheeled solutions right now, hot on the heels of their Tricity going on sale last year. The £3399 Tricity 125 is the firm’s first threewheeler, and it arrived to rave reviews for its peppy performance and nimble handling.
Back in 2014 Yamaha wowed us with the GEN01 concept, which took the Tricity train of thought, but clearly reimagined it as a performance-orientated street bike, rather than an urban riding solution. A year later and the third three-wheeled incarnation appeared, the MWT-9 you see here – a bike that looks pretty much ready to roll, and is expected as a 2017 model. Of course, there’s also plenty of scope to grow the range even further. Yamaha’s platform-sharing engineering is rampant right now, and all the indications would point to the 9 being followed by an MWT-7 using the MT-07 motor, and an MWT-3 using the MT-03 motor as a rival to Piaggio’s MP3, which shifted 559 units in the UK last year alone. Yamaha have also shown the GEN-F and decidedly funky looking GEN-X as concepts – the latter drawing heavily on retro styling that would probably see it fly out of city showrooms.
