Dual-purpose tyres have advanced as rapidly as adventure bikes over the past few years. Although designed to handle light off-road, they work brilliantly in normal road conditions. They give superb grip in the wet and dry, warm up fast and have similar durability to sports touring tyres.
We fitted the new Metzeler Tourance Next to the BMW, Triumph and KTM, and Pirelli’s new Scorpion Trail II to the Ducati. All in sizes: 120/ 7019 front, 170/60-17 rear.
The Honda has more off- road focused wheel sizes, so we fitted tubed Pirelli Scorpion Trail: 90/90-21 front, 150/ 70-18 rear.
For the pure off-road element of our test we fitted Metzeler’s Karoo 3 tyres to the BMW, Triumph and KTM, and Pirelli Scorpion Rally to the Ducati and Honda (the competition version with a narrower 140-section rear). These tyres have a much heavier, blockier tread. They’re not as stable as dual-purpose tyres on the tarmac, but allow our adventure bikes to do incredible things on the dirt… in the right hands.
