John Mcguinness joined Honda as Joey Dunlop’s team-mate in 2000, climbing on to the podium beside the legendary Irishman in that year’s Formula One race. The Morecambe man split with Neil Tuxworth’s team in 2003 to claim his first big bike TT win on a Yamaha in 2004. Two years later he was back in the Honda ranks and as he now begins his 11th season with the Japanese manufacturer Mcguinness says he wants to see out his career on a Fireblade.

“I am like a bloody stick of rock with Honda written right through me,” he joked.

“I have served my time with the Fireblade and I am looking forward to the new bike coming next year. I just wish Honda would let me get involved in the development.”

Mcguinness says the time has passed for him to emulate fellow bike racing legends Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo by jumping ship to another manufacturer in the latter stages of his career.

“Yeah, it’s too late for that now,” the 43-year-old says.

“I don’t want that at this stage of my career and I am happy just to run through with Honda. I’m a bit like that though. I’ve had the same wife for 27 years and when I go to the Chinese I order beef curry and fried rice every time!

“Maybe I don’t have the balls to change,” he reflects.

“Sometimes I wonder if I could have gone any better, could I have achieved any more on another bike but I don’t think I could. I’m happy with what I’ve achieved and I’m not done just yet.”

Murray Walker was one of the first to congratulate Mcguinness on his gong Since joining Honda alongside Joey Dunlop in 2000, John has stayed loyal Mcguinness has been riding the Blade so much he’s moulded to its shape!
