Everything is alien, the surface is treacherous, the bike feels weird, the riding position is odd and you lean out when cornering rather than the other way round. It’s all very strange. But at some point during an off-road training day something will click and it will all start to feel right and it will become one of the best experiences of your life. There are plenty of experience and training days on offer and many are manufacturer-backed. You can choose a simple taster day on a motocross or enduro bike or go big and get some training on a bike like the BMW R1200GS or Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin. What you will leave the training with is a new sense of confidence and understanding of the capabilities of off-road bikes and riders; much of which will benefit your riding on the road in terms of feel of what is going on. the museum’s Friends Scheme which costs £30 for an adult or £50 per year for a whole family. Get in quick and take part in the upcoming Try a Classic Bike Day where members get the chance to ride a number of laps on various museum bikes the West Midlands venue’s grounds. Machines will include a selection of veteran and vintage machines with lever throttle/hand change (all training provided) as well as later machines from 1940s-1960s.
