Every­thing is alien, the sur­face is treach­er­ous, the bike feels weird, the rid­ing po­si­tion is odd and you lean out when cor­ner­ing rather than the other way round. It’s all very strange. But at some point dur­ing an off-road train­ing day some­thing will click and it will all start to feel right and it will be­come one of the best ex­pe­ri­ences of your life. There are plenty of ex­pe­ri­ence and train­ing days on of­fer and many are man­u­fac­turer-backed. You can choose a sim­ple taster day on a motocross or en­duro bike or go big and get some train­ing on a bike like the BMW R1200GS or Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin. What you will leave the train­ing with is a new sense of con­fi­dence and un­der­stand­ing of the ca­pa­bil­i­ties of off-road bikes and riders; much of which will ben­e­fit your rid­ing on the road in terms of feel of what is go­ing on. the mu­seum’s Friends Scheme which costs £30 for an adult or £50 per year for a whole fam­ily. Get in quick and take part in the up­com­ing Try a Clas­sic Bike Day where mem­bers get the chance to ride a num­ber of laps on var­i­ous mu­seum bikes the West Mid­lands venue’s grounds. Ma­chines will in­clude a se­lec­tion of vet­eran and vin­tage ma­chines with lever throt­tle/hand change (all train­ing pro­vided) as well as later ma­chines from 1940s-1960s.
