‘You can get a low mileage bike for under £900’
Bikes that won't lose you a penny
Time was every firm had a 500. In the 1970s you could have had a four-stroke four, fourstroke parallel twin, two-stroke twin, fourstroke transverse V-twin, four-stroke inline twin…
Now 500s are in demand again and the need for ex-learners to find a decent A2 bike is keeping values surprisingly buoyant.
The best choice for around a grand is the 120mph Honda CB500S. You can pay £600 for a shocker or two grand for an immaculate low-miler, but a grand will get you something with maybe 30,000 miles on it.
Suzuki’s basic aircooled GS500 twin is about 10mph slower. Go for a naked one – £750 is all you need to pay for a good’un.
Kawasaki’s ER5 is the commuter version of the GPZ500S, in a simple steel frame. Its performance falls somewhere between the Suzuki and the Honda, but its prices are, if anything, lower than the GS500. You can get a sub-20,000 mile bike for under £900. Like any good used A2 bike, demand exceeds supply and you will always get your money back.
