MARQUEZ PROVES HE’S GROWN UP
Marc Marquez revealed a newfound maturity by settling for third place in Jerez and some safe points; a tactic that would have been almost unheard of for the hard-charging double world champion only months ago.
Unable to run the same pace as Lorenzo and Rossi, Marquez was still satisfied with his podium.
“I tried as hard as I could at the beginning and I tried to follow to see if I could overtake Jorge – but I could already feel that for me the front tyre was a little soft. The track temperature was 20 degrees hotter, and for me and my riding style that is not good.
“Jorge started to make some metres, and I made a different decision and told myself that even though it’s not good for our fans, 16 points is good enough for us.
“Maybe last year was different, but this winter I learned a lot. Before the race, Honda boss Nakamoto came to me and said ‘please just finish the race!’ I know from the past that Jerez is not my best track.
“When I saw that Valentino had an incredible level and that Jorge was a little faster than me too, I thought to myself ‘ take 16 points and be quiet!’”
