Why does my bike only run for a minute?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - Garage -

My 20,000-mile Yamaha SZR660 won’t run properly. After winter I found the fuel system drained down and air-locked. I got it to run but if it was left for a day or two the problem reoccurred. When I switch the ignition on the fuel pump ticks and fills the float bowl as expected. Hey presto, the bike fires up. I can ride for about a minute then it stalls. After a rest it restarts and runs for about the same amount of time. What could it be? Tony Sutton, email

Answered by Charles Marvell, Flitwick Motorcycles I would say it’s either a faulty fuel pump or the float bowl breather is blocked, preventing fuel getting in fast enough to keep the bike running. You also need to make sure that it’s not something like a kinked fuel pipe or rubbish aftermarket fuel filter.
