The legend of the Loch Ness monster began in 1802 when stories of a ‘huge fish’ started to circulate around the village of Drumnadrochit and when, in 1933, hotel manager Mrs Mackay saw the beast the legend was cemented. Since then there have been reports, hoaxes (stand up Marmaduke Wetherell) and myriad pictures claiming to be of the beast. Beast or no beast, the Highlands, or Cairngorms, around Loch Ness and the surrounding area are superb to explore. The roads are largely quiet, deserted and sinuous, and thanks to Scottish law, you can even camp beside the loch on the lookout for Nessie.
