REIGNING CHAMP DOES NOT WANT IT DAMP!
Current Motogp world champion Jorge Lorenzo is praying for sunshine at Silverstone
The Spaniard has struggled in wet conditions this year and blames a lack of confidence in the new Michelin tyres. And while he’s worked in recent rounds to try and regain some of his lost confidence, he admitted to MCN that until he gets more time to try and figure out the tyres, he still remains at something of a loss in difficult conditions.
He said: “I hope it won’t be an issue if it rains. I’m still trying to understand how to go fast with the Michelin rain tyres in case it is wet, and let’s see if it’s something we can improve over the next two races. It wouldn’t be hard to improve from Assen and Sachsenring.”
But while rain might be a disaster for Lorenzo and his title aspirations, if it’s dry there’s one thing that will be almost guaranteed – that the Movistar Yamaha rider will be right in the mix come Sunday’s Silverstone race.
Taking wins at Silverstone in 2010, 2012 and 2013, he’s made his mark on the track since Motogp switched from Donington – and confesses that it’s one of the circuits that he looks forward to because of how well it suits his style.
“I’m looking forward to it, because Silverstone is nice apart from the weather sometimes – it’s England, so it can always rain there! It’s a much more wonderful race in the dry, obviously and I have good memories. I’ve won several times and I’m looking forward to it again. It’s a very fast track – mixed with a bit of everything, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Lorenzo needs a return to form soon if he is to successfully defend his title. Trailing Marquez after a difficult first half of the season, he needs a strong showing at Silverstone to stand any chance of closing the gap to his countryman.
Lorenzo is clearly out to regain the King of Silverstone title he lost to Marquez in their last dry battle there. He added: “In 2013 I could beat him but in the dry in 2014 he finished in front of me. Now we are one-one and this year is another big opportunity for me!”
It was battle royale at Silverstone 2013 when Lorenzo beat Marquez by 0.1s
