SHEENE V ROBERTS, 1979, SILVERSTONE
August 12, Silverstone Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene were locked in an epic race-long battle. Dutchman Will Hartog mixed it with the superstar pair until half- distance and then left it to the determined American and crafty cockney to duke it out in front of 70,000 screaming Silverstone fans. Sheene even managed ‘a wave’ at Roberts as they flew down the Hangar Straight. The ‘wave’ looks decidedly like a two-finger salute but it made for stunning viewing. After the race, Roberts announced he and fellow riders were planning a breakaway world series from the FIM after major fallouts over poor pay and track safety. Roberts won the title, but the series never materialised. The move forced the FIM to improve rider pay and safety became a major issue.
