RUGGIA GETS HIS ELBOW DOWN
August 7, Donington Park Jean Philippe Ruggia may never have won a world title, he didn’t even win that many races (three 250 GPS), but he arguably achieved something far more groundbreaking and important. He was the first person to get his elbow down! At Donington in 1988 he changed everything by scraping his elbow at Coppice. He finished sixth come race day and battled to seventh in the series but his services to motorcycling will never be forgotten. He made people change the way they rode and it’s mad to think he was getting his elbow scraped nearly 30 years ago – long before Marc Marquez was even a sparkle in his mother’s eye! The yellow flag-waving marshal was also mightily impressed.
