BRIT ON A BRI­TISH BIKE AT THE BRI­TISH GP

Au­gust 4, Don­ing­ton Park With Amer­i­can aces dom­i­nat­ing the 500 GP cham­pi­onship in the early 90s it seemed that the Bri­tish crowd at Don­ing­ton Park may not get a great amount to shout about in 1991. En­ter Ron Haslam, on a Nor­ton… all dressed in black. Rocket Ron had been cam­paign­ing the ro­tary-en­gined RCW588 in the Bri­tish cham­pi­onship and Nor­ton had been al­lowed a wild­card en­try to the Bri­tish GP – as no-one could re­ally work out what cc the bike ac­tu­ally was! Ron bat­tled hard to keep the V4s in sight and had a dra­matic dice with Ir­ish­man Ed­die Lay­cock. Haslam fi­nally fin­ished 12th and in the points. He said: “I was try­ing to catch some of the slower V4s. Get­ting points is a real achieve­ment. I had all my fam­ily here watch­ing and I could hear the crowd cheer­ing me on. It’s been amaz­ing.”
