MARQUEZ SAVES THE DAY WITH THIRD
Marc Marquez may well have put one hand on the 2016 Motogp title at Brno, making the most of the difficult conditions to take a third place Ð a result that could be crucial in tipping the title race in his favour.
The Repsol Honda rider gambled wrongly on the choice of tyres for Sundayõs race, going not with the harder option Michelins that took Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi to first and second, but instead going with the softer compound wet tyres.
Fortunately for him, Marquez was able to use his undisputed riding abilities to push through the field to the final podium position.
ÒWE didnõt take the best strategy with tyre choice but it was my decision. I expected a flag-to-flag race as it usually dries quick here but the humidity maybe changed that today. It was impossible to change to slicks. When I realised in the race that it would all be wet I knew I needed to manage the tyres, I was always trying to find the wet parts of the track.
Òwhen Cal and Valentino overtook me I saw the lines that they were using on the hard and they had much more grip so I had to forget about them and instead focused on Barbera and Iannone to fight for the podium.ó
And while it may not seem that significant in the grand scheme of an 18-round championship, the points lead the Spaniard now enjoys may well be enough now to secure him his third Motogp crown.
Now holding a 53-point lead over Rossi and with Lorenzo a further six adrift, Marquez could not finish two races and still lead the title charge Ð an advantage he could only have dreamed of at the start of the season.
Òwith the tyres we were on, it was a good result as itõs 16 points. We gained a lot of points on Lorenzo and only lost four to Valentino. I felt strong in the dry, I felt strong in the wet, I felt strong in the damp and this is important.
Òthis year weõre working like ants, making gradual, steady improvements. I made a mistake with the tyres choice, but itõs easier to judge things in hindsight.ó
Every podium counts in the title chase
