THE FIRST EVER BRIT WINNER OF BRITISH GP
August 2, Silverstone Ian Mcconnachie made history at Silverstone by becoming the first Brit to win a British GP! The 21-year-old had an epic battle in the 80cc class as title contenders Stefan Dorflinger, Jorge Martinez and Hans Spaan clung on to the Derbyshire star’s coat tails. The fight went down to the wire with Mcconnachie pipping furious team-mate Dorflinger by a few thousandths of a second. After his record-setting win Mcconnachie said: “The media attention allotted to the likes of me is pretty poor when compared to the Gardners and Lawsons of this world. That doesn’t happen in, say, boxing. Frank Bruno the heavyweight and Barry Mcguigan the flyweight get a similar amount of coverage. That’s what I’d like to see for bikes.” He went on to finish sixth in the title chase and the 80cc GP class was axed in 1989. Mcconnachie campaigned in 125 GPS in 1988 and 1991 but never achieved the heights of that heady, history-making day in 1986.
