Suck, squeeze, bang, blow – all four-stroke com­bus­tion en­gines work on the same prin­ci­ples. You put fuel and air in one end and, af­ter a se­ries of ex­plo­sions, fun and fumes are pro­duced at the other. But the con­fig­u­ra­tion and num­ber of cylin­ders makes a huge dif­fer­ence to its per­ceived char­ac­ter. Twin, triple, in­line-four, cross­plane, sin­gle or V-twin, each has its own unique traits as well as foibles and there are no right or wrong con­fig­u­ra­tions. At the end of the day it’s horses for cour­ses and in the case of bike en­gines it’s how those ponies are de­liv­ered that gives a mo­tor its unique feel­ing.
