Why does my Harley cut out when fuel’s low?

Motorcycle News (UK) - - MCN Garage -

I have a problem with my 2011 Harley-davidson FLD Switchback. If I am low on fuel after a brisk run and I am slowing down, say coming off a motorway, the engine cuts out when I pull the clutch in. Each time it cuts out repeatedly until I get to a petrol station. But if the fuel level is low and I’m taking it easy there’s no problem. George Forth, Northallerton

Answered by Andy ForbesBuckingham, AFB Motorcycles The fuel feed pipework inside the tank looks like small corrugated vacuum cleaner pipes. One comes out at quite an acute angle from the fuel filter, which isn’t normally a problem, but if the tank is hot after a run, it will soften and without the fuel to support it, it can fold over on itself and restrict fuel flow significantly.
