“The BMW R80 G/S was involved in the very first Dakar rallies but it took them three years until they won one with Hubert Auriol. But you have to feel sorry for Auriol, he won BMW their very first Dakar but the company only built a rep to celebrate Gaston Rahier’s victories in 1984 and ’ 85, as he was German and not French!

“This R80 G/S Paris Dakar was built in 1986, ignoring the fact Rahier actually won on an R100GS. The race bikes had a conventional doublesided swingarm instead of the BMW paralever system, so it isn’t quite the same, but it does have a single seat, bigger tank, tool kit and even a tyre pump tucked into its main frame spar.

“This is a beautiful bike to ride and surprisingly friendly off-road, but it is also easily the rarest bike I own as it is an ex-factory bike and not simply one of BMW’S Dakar bodykits on a stock G/S. It took me ages to locate this one and in the end I got it from its original owner in Germany, I’m not sure they were ever imported into the UK. The signature on the tank is Gaston Rahier’s, which is very rare as he signed every rep in pen and generally owners accidentally polished it off as it wasn’t ever laquered over by BMW.”
