This weekend’s Oulton Park race marks the last round of the MCE British Superbike Championship’s main season and takes the series in to the final three-round title-deciding Showdown.
Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam and Honda Racing’s Jason O’halloran have clinched their places in the allimportant shootout, but the remaining three spots are all up for grabs with eight riders in contention.
Just 38 points separate Michael Laverty in fourth from Tommy Bridewell in 10th and with Oulton Park being a triple-header - meaning that there are 75 points available - it’s all to play for.
While Byrne, Haslam and O’halloran have confirmed their showdown spots they can’t afford to rest on their laurels. Having taken one victory apiece last time out at Cadwell Park, the battle between Byrne and Haslam is seriously hotting up with just 12 podium credits separating them. With five podium credits given for a race win, three for second and one for third, both Byrne and Haslam know just how crucial this weekend’s racing will be.
Byrne struggled while Haslam won last time the series visited Oulton Park, but that was before his Be Wiser Ducati team turned the corner with the Panigale which then saw Byrne go on to take six victories from 10 races.
The pressure isn’t off Honda’s O’halloran either. He might sit a comfortable third after a stunning show of consistency this season but his podium credits are way off the men in front of him with 10 to his name compared to Byrnes’ 43 and Haslam’s 31.
