Yamaha XT600E (1990-2004)
Unbreakable four-valve air-cooled engine in a simple no-frills trail chassis. Crashproof polypropylene panels and guards, chromed steel rims, and it didn’t even have a tacho for the first few years. Only 45bhp, so you won’t be seeing the ton very often, but 70mph cruising is fine. It handles very nicely on-road and is perfect for trails, but it’s still a bit heavy for serious mudplugging. Does 55mpg, can be fully DIY serviced in little over an hour, and there’s a whole industry producing aftermarket bits. What you’ll pay now £850-£1500 But should you? There hasn’t been a basic trailie since they killed it off, so yes.
