Underdogs have their podium day
Seeing riders other than those from Kawasaki and Ducati, and occasionally Honda, on the podium in 2016 is an unusual sight.
So having two riders from different privateer teams on the same podium was a double treat in race two.
Alex De Angelis (Ioda Racing Team Aprilia) and Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team Ducati) finished second and third respectively, in what was an emotional day for both.
“Of course it is a special feeling,” said former GP star De Angelis, who had scored a best of seventh place before his Sunday podium. “First of all it is my first podium in Superbike so the first time for everyone is something special. I came from a crash in Japan last year and I spent all my winter to make my rehabilitation. I had surgery during the season, before Aragon. It was not so easy but now, finally, I am back with a smile.”
Former IDM champion Fores used all his previous knowledge of Lausitz to take his first ever top three in WSB. “Yes I think it was important because in the past I was able to ride here in wet conditions and I was able to ride here and I know which parts of the track are good and not good. I was riding really calm on the bike waiting for the mistakes of the other riders.”
