‘It has to be the winner here’
Over a beer and burger at the Buccleuch Arms, we compare notes. Which one would we choose to do the trip on again? Does the bigger budget of the RT make it better than the Versys or Tracer?
It does not. James actually prefers the Yamaha, money no object: “I’d take the Tracer either way,” he says. “The one thing that lets it down is tank range – 130 miles isn’t enough – but aside from that it’s light enough to have fun on, it’s comfortable, it’s nimble and, best of all, it’s brilliant value.”
Meanwhile Jimmy rates the Versys his favourite: “It’s tricky, because all three are excellent; but if you take into account prices, there’s no way the RT’S ride is seven grand better than the Versys. But is the Versys – my favourite – four grand better than the Tracer? You have to say no.”
And I agree with both of them: the BMW is my favourite over long distances, the Kawasaki is my favourite on this test, but the Tracer 700 is such good value it has to be the winner everywhere.
